And so McCain locks the GOP nomination, Clinton and Obama are carving up the country, divvying delegates “one-for-me-one-for-you” like a brother and sister splitting the entrailed pennies of a gutted piggy bank, and the 2008 election looks more miserable than ever. I know a lot of people (myself included, to a degree) think Mitt hung himself with his strategy, but I can’t help feeling Huckabee’s deranged mouseketeers had an effective hand in his departure. Imagine what the election might have been like if religion wasn’t an issue, if the minions were too busy raising their hands and swaying to Christian rock to notice. But this entry isn’t about that…

We watched the girls slug it out on Idol this evening. Once again I thought Brooke White did a good job, but got a bigger kick out of Simon’s obvious crush on her. David Archuleta did a good job last night, too, and now I’m very afraid for both of them. As of now, our adorable ambassadors of goodness are front-runners in the competition, but how long will it take before word spreads of their religious condition? So far the only ripples seem to be in membership circles and little burps appear in the Deseret News and other, more minor, periodicals. As the last 12 contestants whittle away, I fear a heinous campaign will be launched against our Idol angels as it had against Mitt– especially since it worked against Mitt. Imagine the horror of parishioners assembling together on American Idol nights, manning call stations across the Inbred Belt, heaping votes on Amanda Overmyer (the biker Living Dead Doll) and Danny Noriega (the sneering cream puff) just to keep the crown away from the true American Idols.

So rise up and dial, ye Saints! If you can’t get to your home or visiting teaching, at least do this. For Brooke and David (sounds like a designer fruit mail-order company). For Mitt.

Yeah, okay, maybe I am painting a pretty hokey picture, but ask yourself… is it really that far-fetched?

Of course, if blogs would just stop mentioning their religious affiliation, Google algorithms wouldn’t be able to make a correlation.

And the country is better off with Mitt out of the White House.

I agree with the first comment queuno. That’s why I kept the “M” word out of the entry. Just to be safe, I’ll take the “L” word out, too. Thanks for the quick response.

queuno, as for the second comment, it looks dismal any way you slice it.

You know, these two might make it quite far even without the LDS vote. They really are the two that I enjoy the most–and it’s fun that other people nationwide think so too. Most of my 8th grade students who have commented about American Idol have all said that Brooke and David A. are their favorites. It’s neat that they have such appeal apart from the LDS vote. I haven’t brought up religion in the same conversation as American Idol, but most of them know that I’m LDS. I’d be curious if they know that about David and Brooke and if it would even make a difference. I was always curious about, when I heard people not of our faith who supported Mitt Romney, how much religion played a part in their thinking, if at all.
On a side note, it’s an interesting feeling to be one of the only “Mormons” that some of these kids have personally known. I grew up that way as a kid in Oregon, but living the last few years in Provo kind of gave me a different comfort level about having a majority of people understand my faith. Whereas now in Texas it’s back to being quite “unknown”.

    Clean (#5),

It’s not so much relying on the membership vote I’m addressing, it’s the “poisoning of the well” by over-zealous antagonists. I really don’t think that’s going to be a concern, either (and if it does happen, it’ll probably be so minor we may never hear of it); I think America’s tired of the smarmy religion bashing.

Can I tell you how tickled I was that you know what “Living Dead Dolls” are??? Am now wiping the spewed guts of fresh blueberries off my Dell.

I have an eccentric niece who collects them-in our rather bran family, she is a delightful piece of cheesecake all the way down to the cat eye contacts she had made and wears on Halloween.

I wouldn’t worry about Idol. I’m fairly certain that the “REAL” intellectuals and run-the-country wannabes are too busy arguing over the election and watching debate/political forums to give it more than a glance. Plus-I hear Huckabee can’t sing…*eg*
