The Things We Find Funny

November 30th, 2007 · No Comments

Life. You end up laying a lot of things at your own door that you didn’t plan on. Bad decisions. They didn’t tell you that you can steal your own life. Skimming a little here and there. There’s repentance, that’s nice. They call it a “do-over.” There are no do-overs in life, not really. A do-over […]

No Country for High Priests

November 26th, 2007 · 3 Comments

Much to my wife’s displeasure, I really get glued to the crime shows on Court TV and A&E. One of my favorite episodes was about a nebbish night watchman that worked at an armed truck company. He’s duped by a girl into believing she’s in love with him, and is persuaded to let her and […]

Exalting with the Stars

November 22nd, 2007 · 2 Comments

Living in Southern California has its obvious perks. For example, it’s late November and today was a sunny 70+ degrees. We’ve got this swell ocean slamming against our multi-million dollar properties. There’s Disneyland (we’re going there on Thanksgiving), Universal Studios, Hollywood, Malibu, BH 90210, etc.
And, of course, our landscape is bursting with celebrities.
I’ve had the good […]

The Perfect Storm

November 16th, 2007 · 2 Comments

Last Sunday on “60 Minutes” a segment aired about a new generation taking over for the baby-boomers, called the “millennials.” These are the young people born between 1980 and 1995 who grew up raised by doting parents who said they were “special” and “unique” and “winners.” They belonged to little league and soccer teams where […]

You don’t know how lucky you are, boy, back in the USSR

November 11th, 2007 · 5 Comments

I hadn’t heard this kind of Church story before and it intrigued me.
In Russia they don’t have wards, only branches and districts. Recently, two patriarchs went there and gave patriarchal blessings among the small and grateful memberships. What was discovered astounded both the patriarchs and the First Presidency: They found every one of the tribes […]

Catching Up to the Kenyan

November 7th, 2007 · 2 Comments

A friend of mine—and in many ways a mentor—recently received a call to be president of a new overseas Missionary Training Center. In the time that I’ve known him, he’s already been a bishop, a stake president and a mission president. When he vacated his most recent position– high priest group leader– I took […]

No Habla Tongues

November 7th, 2007 · 4 Comments

The other day I followed an exchange on a favorite Mormon blog regarding the necessity of word-perfect sacrament and baptismal prayers. Personally, I wholeheartedly support word-perfection, even at the risk of humiliation by multiple do-overs—and I’ve personally had my share. There’s a reason why these prayers are spelled out in the standard works and I […]

Attend the Tale of Johnny Depp…

November 4th, 2007 · 2 Comments

My 11-year old daughter has a crush on Johnny Depp. I’m sure she’s not alone in her demographic; Depp has successfully infiltrated the hearts of kids, pre-teens, teen & adults with his roles as pirate, nutty candy factory owner, shear-handed boy and more.
About a year ago, Miss D (my daughter) was at a family friend’s […]

Halloween Recap, Apostates and Phoning It In

November 3rd, 2007 · No Comments

Well, this was one of the best Halloweens our nuclear family has had. Our ward held its Trunk or Treat & Chili Cookoff Monday night as an FHE activity, and the masses flooded the parking lot. Our ward, known for its activities, attracted the usual gaggle of former members who moved away and non-Mormon neighbors who love us as long as we […]
